Eugene is the county seat of Lane County and is located on the Willamette River in Oregon.  The city received its name after Eugene Franklin Skinner, a settler who built a cabin there in 1846.  Eugene is a laid-back university town where you are more likely to see tee-shirts than you are suits and ties despite the fact it is the second largest city in Oregon.  Eugene is commonly mispronounced as "YOU-gene" instead of "you-GENE."

The population of Eugene was estimated to be 142,185 in 2003.  Nearby cities include Alvadore, Coburg, Creswell, and Springfield.  Places of higher education offered in Eugene are the University of Oregon, Gutenberg College, Northwest Christian College, Eugene Bible College, and Lane County Community College.

A couple of well-known residents have included religious leader Garner Ted Armstrong and author Ken Kesey.  Eugene was the filming location for 1978's "Animal House" and 1986's "Stand By Me."  It is also the birthplace of Nike, the famous shoe manufacturer!

Eugene has an array of great things to see and do.  There are recreational and fitness locations, cultural events, vineyards and wineries, and performing arts venues.  The combination of activities makes Eugene a popular travel spot.

Eugene has unlimited miles of walking, jogging and bicycling as well as garden and park paths located all along the Willamette River.  It is rated as one of the top ten cycling cities in the United States.  Visitors can enjoy a picnic, camping, swimming, renting a boat, skiing, or sailing.  Several shopping centers are located throughout the city as well.

Cultural Sites

The University of Oregon (U of O) is an attraction in itself.  The campus is located on 250 acres with an architectural building, beautiful footpaths, and a breathtaking landscape.  The University of Oregon Museum of Art and Museum of Natural History are great places to explore for the history or art buff.

If you prefer cultural events and art, Eugene offers ballet, opera, and the symphony.  The most popular venue is the Hult Center for the Performing Arts (www.hultcenter.org).  The center offers free tours every Thursday and Saturday.

Each Saturday between the months of April and December, Eugene features the outdoor Saturday Market.  The market has unique arts and crafts items, food, and music.

Nature and More!

For the wine connoisseur, there are many vineyards or wineries located within a 30-mile radius of Eugene.  Hinman Vineyards and Secret House Winery are popular locations offering daily wine tasting.

Nearby parks and recreation include Willamette National Forest, Three Sisters Wilderness, Oregon Dunes, Jasper Park Recreation Site, Elijah Bristow State Park, and Armitage Park.  The Hendricks Park Rhododendron Garden is a popular attraction.  The 20-acre park features over 6,000 aromatic plants, picnicking, and hiking trails.
