Eugene is the county seat of Lane County and is located on the Willamette River in Oregon.  The city received its name after Eugene Franklin Skinner, a settler who built a cabin there in 1846.  Eugene is a laid-back university town where you are more likely to see tee-shirts than you are suits and ties despite the fact it is the second largest city in Oregon.  Eugene is commonly mispronounced as "YOU-gene" instead of "you-GENE."

The population of Eugene was estimated to be 142,185 in 2003.  Nearby cities include Alvadore, Coburg, Creswell, and Springfield.  Places of higher education offered in Eugene are the University of Oregon, Gutenberg College, Northwest Christian College, Eugene Bible College, and Lane County Community College.

A couple of well-known residents have included religious leader Garner Ted Armstrong and author Ken Kesey.  Eugene was the filming location for 1978's "Animal House" and 1986's "Stand By Me."  It is also the birthplace of Nike, the famous shoe manufacturer!
