Goodie Bags For Kids: Halloween, Christmas, Birthday

Goody bags are a fun, inexpensive way to treat kids at Halloween parties, Christmas get-togethers, birthday celebrations, and beyond. With some creativity and imagination, you will have as much fun assembling your goody bags as the kids will have opening them.

Start by deciding what kind of bag you will use. Clear, plastic sandwich baggies are a very cheap option (buy a box of 100 baggies for just a few dollars at the grocery store). Secure the baggies with a bit of curled ribbon: orange/black for Halloween; red/green for Christmas; any color for Birthdays.

Another choice is the paper lunch bag. Dress the bag up with holiday-themed stickers, or recruit some kids to color, cut and paste pumpkins, Christmas trees, snowmen, birthday candles, etc. onto the bags. You can also purchase themed baggies at dollar and party stores. Although these bags will cost a little more, the convenience may be worth it.

Now comes the fun part! Choose what to put inside your bags. Several sweet treats, plus a few trinkets or toys, will fatten your baggie quite nicely. Here are some sure-fire winners:

Candy - Kids love suckers. Any kind will do. Dum Dums are probably your cheapest option, but Tootsie Pops and Caramel Apple Pops are always a hit, too. Kids love gummy fruit snacks. You can buy a box of 8-10 fun-shaped gummy snack pouches at the grocery store for as low as one dollar (watch for sales). Choose Smarties, Lemonheads, Jolly Ranchers, or other singly wrapped candies from the bulk bin at your grocery or party store; that way you can buy the amount you need, and no more. Chocolate bars, though delicious, will melt when clutched in hot little hands. Consider the age of your goody bag recipients before investing in this messy confection.

Toys/Trinkets - You can never have too many bouncy balls. Kids of all ages—heck, adults of all ages—can't resist the appeal of the bouncy ball as it soars through the air. At approximately twenty five cents a pop, the bouncy ball makes a nice goody bag filler.

Boys and girls, young and old, love to wear rubber bracelets on their wrists and ankles. Buy a bunch of cheap bracelets at the dollar store, or check out the variety offered in an Oriental Trading Company catalog. Slip a bracelet or two into each goody bag and watch the kids go crazy! Stickers have timeless appeal. Buy a pad of holiday-themed stickers for a dollar or two at a craft store (try Michaels ), cut strips of stickers for each goody bag, and watch to see what happens next. You'll see stickers on the backs of hands, cheeks, foreheads,and noses. Keep a few extra stickers on hand, because you might also see tears if the stickers lose their stick and fall off.

Balloons are great fun. You don't even have to blow them up; the kids will do that for you. Just be sure they're old enough to be safe (popped balloons are a choking hazard), and watch as the balloons whiz and zoom and fly all over the place. Prepare your ears for the POP!, too.

Party stores, craft stores, and dollar stores offer many candy/toy/trinket options for holiday goody bags. Enjoy picking and choosing the fun items you think your kids will enjoy. Be sure to create a few extra goody bags for unexpected children, neighbor kids, and other young people you know. Keep a couple goody bags for yourself, too. You never know when you're going to need a pouch of gummy fruit snacks or a bouncy ball!
