History: Early Tucson Arizona Settlers

Tucson Arizona has been settled for more than 12,000 years. From migrating Archaic and Paleoindian hunters and gatherers to the Hohokam settlers, the area was well-inhabited from its early days. The more advanced civilization called Hohokam existed between 200 A.D. and the mid-1400s. Descendants of these cultures were the Tohono O'odham and the Pima people.

During the mid-1500s, Arizona was visited by the Coronado Expedition while searching for the Seven Cities of Gold. The Mission San Xavier del Bac was established in 1699 by Father Francisco Kino. The Mission San Agustin was established in 1757 on the Santa Cruz River (west bank). These establishments were completed during the late 1790s.
