Fort Worth, Texas - Relax in the Western Heritage
Fort Worth is the county seat of Tarrant County. The community, which is located on the Trinity River, was named in honor of General William J. Worth of the Mexican War. In 2003, the population was estimated to be 585,122. So take time off and come explore the western lifestyle and heritage that Fort Worth offers.
Fort Worth is only 30 miles west of Dallas and is often dismissed as some poor relation to its complacent neighbor. Unlike Dallas, Fort Worth is one of the most "western" cities and has a rush of energy, but is surprisingly laid back. Today, the city takes pride in its thriving culture, and second to aviation and defense, the cattle trade is a major industry. Proportionately, Fort Worth is home to more millionaires than any other city in the United States.
Indians, Cattle, Railroads and Oil
Fort Worth is an open American history book of the West. In 1849, Major Ripley A. Arnold led a United States cavalry troop to Fort Worth and established an army outpost overlooking the river. The post was built to protect settlers from Indian attacks. In 1870, the last major stop on the historic Chisholm Trail was made in Fort Worth. The Chisholm Trail was the dusty path in which cattle were driven north to market in Kansas.
After the Civil War, Fort Worth Stockyards became a premier shipping destination and supply station for cattlemen. Fort Worth became a haven for many outlaws and cowboys. The large number of people brought a load of gambling parlors, dance halls, and saloons to the town. This era was wild, and the town was nicknamed "Hell's Half Acre." In West Texas, oil was found, and Fort Worth became the center of wheeling and dealing for the gushing gold.
