A Brief History of Charlotte

Charlotte became a magnet for gold prospectors in 1799 when a gold nugget weighing 17 pounds was discovered in the area. However, the gold boom didn't last long because of the California Gold Rush. The area then became a center for the cotton industry, and grew and grew. Today, it is ever growing and ever changing as new businesses and people move into the area.

Some well-known residents of Charlotte have included the Reverend Billy Graham, football player Michael J. Fox and Olympic medalist (swimming division) Donald Schollander. Also, the television evangelist Jim Bakker who was found guilty in a religious scam had operated his ministry from Charlotte, and was known for founding the "PTL Club."
