A book on baby’s symptoms and how to treat them. This is the "plunger" of baby items: something you inevitably need in the middle of the night, yet probably don’t think of ahead of time. Take a look at the book before you buy it. Go to "Croup", and read. In addition to describing the barking cough, and the shower treatment, it should tell you when it becomes serious enough to warrant medical attention. Or take a look at "fever" and see how easy it is to spot the same information.

A basket of books. Get a bunch of board books (the heavy cardboard ones for toddlers) along with some for older kids. The salesperson at the bookstore should be able to recommend some titles. Include Dr. Seuss’ "The Places You’ll Go", and write a letter to the baby inside it.

A Land’s End diaper bag. They’re reasonably priced, and they last forever. I’ve had mine for seven years now. They’re not cutesy, which means the new daddy won’t feel as self-conscious carrying it.

Some Baby Einstein DVDs or videos. Ignore the educational hype. This is the best way I know to get twenty minutes of peace-on-demand (translation: a shower or time to cook dinner) from a two month old.

Some pre-cooked meals. Make and freeze a tray of lasagna, some chicken cutlets—whatever you want. Include cooking instructions. During those first few weeks, moms are so drained that cooking is a huge task. Yet that’s the worst time to count on fast food; she needs some real nutrition.

A zillion thank you notes and stamps. She isn’t supposed to drive for those first few weeks, and she’ll go through a lot of these. - By Alice Accardi

My youngest (of three) kids was born on a cold February morning. Two days later, when we brought her home from the hospital, I got a phone call from a good friend. Don’t worry about dinner, she said, since it would be arriving at around 5 pm.

Sure enough, at 5 pm. she arrived. Leaving her car running with her two kids inside, she brought a piping hot pizza, a box of my favorite cookies, and a bottle of soda. It was one of my favorite gifts, from someone who has walked a mile in my footsteps.

There are lots of other great gifts that you probably won’t find on any registry. Think about these:

A coupon for sleep. If you have some time to spare, promise that you’ll be on call for your friend when the sleep deprivation gets to be too much. And make her take you up on it. New moms tend to think they should be able to handle it all by themselves. Yet sleep deprivation is probably the biggest hurdle in those early weeks. Tell her you’ll stop by once a week and she is not to treat you as company, or use that time to get stuff done. She is to sleep, and you’ll take care of the baby (and throw in a load of laundry if possible.) She’ll thank you forever.

A night out. Get a gift certificate to a local restaurant—the kind with linen tablecloths—and promise to baby sit. Yes, she’ll call you every half hour. But time out with your spouse is a rarity once the baby comes along; this will be a real treat.

An offer to buy her baby announcements. There are lots of catalogs out there—go online and get her some. Then tell her that whatever she chooses—or the first 25—is on you.

A gift certificate to a local portrait studio. Sears, J.C. Penney and the Picture People all do baby pictures, and new parents love them. But that’s frequently one more expense, so a gift certificate is a great idea!

A weekly diaper delivery. She’ll need a zillion, but storage is probably a problem Promise her you’ll drop off a bag and some wipes every week for the next four weeks, or whatever you think you can afford. And start clipping coupons for diapers as well.

Go online and find some baby-friendly places nearby. Make up a binder including a page on each, along with the appropriate admission fee. The aquarium, the local food court, local gardens; all are great places for babies.

A baby gate. Babies are frequently walking at around their first birthday (for my youngest, it was at 10 months), which means they’re mobile even before that. If she has a staircase, invest in a gate which can be bolted into the top of the stairs. Even if she’s in an apartment, she’ll need to gate off certain areas—say a hot stove.
