In life you will only have one mother and she should always be remembered. You want her to know how much you love her now, not wonder if she ever knew. Mother’s Day Throughout the Years - Julia Ward Howe

Julia Ward Howe was the author of, “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and in 1872 suggested “Mother’s Day for Peace” for June 2 after being inspired by a homemaker named, Anna R. Jarvis. She had seen every side of war, the good, the bad and those left behind. Working with the widows or the orphans left behind in war gave her first hand knowledge of what war could do. It was believed that this day would represent peace, womanhood and motherhood. Boston did celebrate the day for 10 years, but it eventually died out.

Anna Jarvis had a daughter, whom shared the same name and after her mother died she carried on her mother’s dream. Anna M. Jarvis (daughter) loved her mother very much and after she died she thought every one should appreciate their mothers while they are alive. She succeeded at having “Mother’s Day” become a national holiday. The one thing her mother had wished out loud in church, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother's day,” her wish came true through her daughter.

The year after her mother passed she held a memorial for all mothers and supplied the church with white carnations at her church in Grafton, West Virginia. The carnations were her mother’s favorite flower, which signified purity and endurance. Later the white carnation meant the mother was deceased and a red carnation was for the mother still living.

In 1907 the first Mother’s Day would be held in an auditorium in Philadelphia, but over 15,000 people showed up and there wasn’t room for everyone inside the building. The Governor of West Virginia proclaimed “Mother’s Day” in 1912, other states started to follow suit. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson would announce that on the 2nd Sunday in May we would celebrate, “Mother’s Day” as a national holiday.

But soon it became too commercialized for her. She believed it was a day to celebrate with your mother and not for a day companies would make money off of it. She tried to have it stopped by taking the matter to court. However, this didn’t stop Mother’s Day from happening.

Present Mother’s Day

Today, Mother’s Day or Mothering Day is a day that the children give their mom’s homemade or store bought cards, candy, flowers, going out to fancy restaurants, jewelry, gifts of all sorts to breakfast in bed. Families get together and either take mom out or have a cook out in her honor.

On this day remember all the wonderful things your mother did for you. Did your mother wipe away your tears? Teach you to tie your shoes? Hold you or comfort you at night when you had a bad dream? Hold your hair back when you were sick and made you chicken noodle soup. Did she ever tell you to look both ways before crossing a street or tie your shoes? Your mother has been there for you through it all. Why shouldn’t she get a day to get spoiled or remembered? This is her day, make sure you treat her well.

If you happen to be miles away and know you won’t be able to be with her on Mother’s Day then take a few moments and write her a letter, that’s right pen and paper. Wouldn’t your mom be surprised when she checks the mail and finds a real letter from you? Sure, she probably expects a card but not a letter telling her how much you care or reminding her of the wonderful times you had together. There may be a tear or two that drops down from your mother’s cheek but those will be tears of joy because she knows how much she means to you. If letter writing isn’t your thing, there is always the phone. A simple call on Mother’s Day will brighten her smile, don’t just call and say, “Happy Mother’s Day” but call and chat with her for a while. If your mother owns a computer you can even send her an email just to let her know how much you care. If none of these work for you, try sending her flowers or other gifts you know she’d enjoy on this special day.

If you are a husband trying to help your little ones prepare for Mother’s Day, remember it’s the simple things that make mom really smile. Cook up her favorite breakfast and beverage and have the children serve it to her in bed with a red carnation to top things off. Let your children have at the art supplies and make her a wonderful gift. If you don’t mind a slight mess you may want to make handprints so she remembers their size years down the road when she looks back. Take her out to her favorite restaurant to end this wonderful night unless of course she prefers to stay indoors and cook.
