Kansas City, Missouri sits on the state line of Kansas and Missouri, with the beautiful sights and most of the population being on the Missouri side.  The city has Mediterranean-style and Art Deco-style buildings that make it an interesting place to visit.  With a population of around 442,768 as of 2003, Kansas City is a center for transportation and manufacturing.  It is also the county seat of Jackson County.

A Look at Kansas City History

The city's beginnings can be traced back to 1821, when Missouri was added to the Union.  That year, a Frenchman named Francois Chouteau from St. Louis arrived in the area from the Missouri River to establish a trading post. He moved his trading post to higher ground after a flood in 1826.  Another man named John Calvin McCoy opened a store on the Santa Fe Trail.  In 1838 McCoy, along with 13 other men, bought a 271-acre tract of land and formed the Town Company.  This later would be the first downtown district of Kansas City.

The new township was named "Town of Kansas" after a group of Indians who lived in the area - the Kansa Indians.  In 1853, the town was incorporated, and the name was called "City of Kansas."  Then in 1889, the city became simply "Kansas City."

The growth and industry of the area can be attributed mainly to railroads. Kansas City had a large cattle industry, with the Kansas City Stockyard opening in 1870 and the Kansas City Livestock Exchange in the early 20th century.  Industry and annexations contributed to tremendous growth of the city during the 1900s.  Also, the nation's first planned shopping mall was built in Kansas City in 1922 by J.C. Nichols Co.  It was called the Country Club Plaza. This district now covers 55 acres and has beautiful statues and fountains.

Today, Kansas City is known for auto assembly plants, underground storage and its foreign trade zone.  Also, the city has more fountains than any other except Rome.
