Make Mother’s Day a Tradition to Remember

There’s been a Mother’s Day tradition in my family for the past while, where my sister and I take out our mother to a nice place, and we sit together, laugh together and talk together about anything and everything.

Now this tradition isn’t about the number of dollars we’ve spent to get there, or the nice gifts we ravish our mother in. It’s about treasuring the time we have together and really showing her just how much she is loved and needed.

To get a better idea of this tradition, let’s go back to when it started. My sister and I were much younger than we are now, and in fact, we needed our mother to drive us to wherever it was we were going that year. I believe that first year we went to the lift locks. It was a long drive away – perhaps an hour or so, but our mother didn’t mind and neither did we.

Anyway, when we got there, we gathered up all the stuff we had loaded into the car, and made our way down towards the water. I wanted my sister and I to carry everything, so that Mom could relax on her day, but she insisted that she help carry some things, which I was very grateful for in the long run, because we had some very heavy stuff.

In fact, the two of us ended up grabbing each end of a big blue cooler, filled with all sorts of lunch goodies. My sister carried down the bag of snacks and other non-cooler items, such as the blanket. We set up camp and there we stayed for the afternoon.

The next year, we got a little fancier, and bought our mother a picnic basket to go along with the occasion. Then after that we bought some (lightweight) dishes and silverware. Pretty soon we had it down to a great art. The biggest problem was deciding where we wanted to go.

Now every year we still go out and find a nice place surrounded by nature to enjoy ourselves once more and celebrate everything that is our Mom. So far we’ve been lucky weather-wise, but I’m sure we could make do just as well if we had to stay inside for a year. After all, it isn’t about the location or the gifts. It’s about the quality time our family gets to share together. It’s about the traditions that you will remember for a lifetime.
