How to Pack a Shoe gift box for Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child is an annual gift project operated by the non-profit relief organization Samaritan’s Purse. Each November, volunteers across North America collect about eight million gift-filled shoe gift boxes that are then distributed to children living in desperate situations around the world. As the largest Christmas project in the world, Operation Christmas Child is currently active in over one hundred countries. If you would like to participate in Operation Christmas Child by filling a shoe gift box, here’s what you need to do.

First of all, find a regular-sized shoe gift box. You can use one that you already have at home or pick one up at a local Operation Christmas Child distribution centers. To locate a distribution center, visit the Samaritan’s Purse website or contact a local church or school. (Churches and schools are often involved in gift giving to Operation Christmas Child.) Alternatively, you can use a plastic gift box of a comparable size.

Next, determine who will receive your shoe gift box. Will you be preparing your gift box for a boy or a girl? What will be the age range of that boy or girl? The ranges suggested by OCC are children ages 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14.

You will need to attach a label to the top of your shoe gift box indicating the gender and age range you selected. Labels are available on the Operation Christmas Child brochure (available wherever Operation Christmas Child distributes shoe gift boxes) as well as on the Samaritan’s Purse website.

Now you are ready to begin filling your shoe gift box. A trip to a local department store or discount store should provide you with all you need. Take your gift box with you so you can be certain all the items fit. Also, if you have a child or children old enough to help, perhaps you can fill the gift box together. This could become a cherished Christmas tradition.

Popular shoe gift box items recommended by Operation Christmas Child include school supplies, toys, clothing, hard candy (in a sealed bag), and personal hygiene items. Remember that many of the children who receive the Operation Christmas Child gift boxes live in impoverished nations and do not have regular access to many of the basic items you might enjoy.

There are also certain items that are not accepted by Operation Christmas Child. Since many of the shoe gift boxes will be distributed to children living in war-torn areas, some gifts are inappropriate and therefore not accepted. Check in your brochure or online if you are unsure about a specific item.

Though not required, Operation Christmas Child also allows you to include a personal note and/or photo inside your shoe gift box.

Finally, make a donation of at least seven dollars (cash or check) per gift box to help cover the cost of shipping. If you already have a brochure, you can place your donation inside the attached envelope and place the envelope inside the gift box. If not, then you can get an envelope when you drop off your gift-filled shoe gift box at the collection center. Samaritan’s Purse will send you a receipt for your donation (over a certain amount) that you may be able to claim as a tax deduction. If you prefer, you can make your donation online.
