Dayton, Ohio:  Gem City and the Birthplace of Aviation

Dayton is the county seat in southwestern Ohio located in Montgomery County on the Great Miami River.  Dayton was victim to flooding until dams were constructed in the early 20th century.  The city was named after a founding father named Jonathan Dayton. 

Dayton is known as the birthplace of aviation and the gem city.  It is also well known for its industrial, aerospace, and technological research.  Many technological innovations and inventions have been produced in Dayton.

The population of Dayton in 2003 was estimated at 161,696.  Nearby cities and towns are Fort McKinley, Kettering, Moraine, Oakwood, and Riverside.  Places of higher education offered in Dayton are the University of Dayton, the Wright State University, and the Sinclair Community College. 

Interesting Facts about Dayton

Many well known residents of Dayton have included the aviation pioneers - the Wright Brothers (Orville and Wilbur), writer/poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, entrepreneur John H. Dayton has several nearby parks and recreational sites including Riverscape, Eastwood Metro Park, and Possum Creek Metro Park.  It also features several historical sites and museums to explore such as the Carriage Reserve, the SunWatch Indian Village, the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, and the Carillon Historical Park.

Dayton Art Institute is a museum of fine arts.  The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base holds the National Museum of the United States Air Force.  Guests can also tour the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park (www.daytonaviationheritage.areaparks.com), which commemorates the lives of Orville and Wilbur Wright as well as the achievements of Paul Laurence Dunbar.

For the performing arts enthusiast, they may choose from a variety of venues that include the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, home to the Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera.  In addition to the orchestra and opera, this center hosts concerts, Broadway shows, weddings, etc.  The Victoria Theatre, the Loft Theatre, the Fraze Pavilion, the Hara Arena, and the Nutter Arena also present several concerts, ballets, etc.

The Cox Arboretum and Gardens Metro Park (www.coxarboretum.org) is 189 acres and features a shrub garden, a butterfly house, a garden, a children's maze, a conifer knoll, an herb garden, a crab apple alley, several garden varieties, and 3.5 miles of walking trails. 

Another awe-inspiring place to visit in Dayton is The Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum.  It is 200 acres of one of the oldest "garden" cemeteries in the United States.  More than 3,000 trees sweep over the rolling hills, many of which are more than a century old.  It became a place of refuge during the 1913 flood.  It is listed in the National Register of Historical Places for the Romanesque gateway, office, and chapel located in the cemetery.  All the monuments memorialize people who helped shaped the nation and the city of Dayton.  The monuments range from boulders to statues and temples.  More than 100,000 bodies reside in this final resting place.
