Columbus is the beautiful state capital of Ohio located in Franklin County. This city was named after the famous explorer Christopher Columbus who discovered America. Today the city still prides itself on entrepreneurial zeal.
The city was founded in 1812 at the meeting of the Olentangy and Scioto rivers. During the Civil War, Columbus was a military center and had the largest Confederate prison. Columbus can credit its growth to the manufacture of war aircraft during WWII. In 1930, Columbus received attention nationally due to the Ohio State Penitentiary fire that killed 320 prisoners.

The population of Columbus in 2003 was estimated at 728,432, ranking the city as the 31st largest city in the nation. Nearby cities and towns are Bexley, Grandview Heights, Marble Cliff, Upper Arlington, and Valleyview. Places of higher learning offered include Ohio State University, Ohio Dominican College, and Columbus College of Art and Design.
Several famous inhabitants of the capital city have included Olympic athlete Blaine Wilson, writer and cartoonist James G. Thurber, Olympic gymnastic gold medallist Paul Hamm, actor Philip Michael Thomas, and actresses Debra Winger and AJ Langer. Rascal Flats is a popular local band. Columbus is home to the following sports teams: (minor league baseball) Clippers, (major league soccer) Crew, (arena football) Destroyers, and (NHL) Blue Jackets.

Several world-class buildings are located in Columbus such as the Columbus Convention Center, the Wexner Center designed by Peter Eisenman, and the State House. The State House (http://www.statehouse.state.oh.us/) is a magnificent Greek Revival design that began in 1839 and was completed 22 years later in 1861. It is located at downtown Columbus at the intersection of Broad Street and High Street.
Columbus has a variety of museums to explore such as the COSI - Columbus, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Franklin Park Conservatory, the Ohio Historical Society, and the Ohio Railway Museum. The Ohio Railway Museum features both static and operational railway equipment. Travelers can visit the Franklin Park Conservatory (www.fpconservatory.org) to view a scale replica of the Santa Maria.
