Columbia is located in Richland County on the Congaree River, right in the heart of South Carolina.  Columbia actually straddles two counties - Richland and Lexington Counties, but more of its population is in Richland County.  The area was named for famous explorer Christopher Columbus.  The estimated population was 117,357 as of 2003.  Columbia is near the cities of Arcadia Lakes, Dentsville, Cayce, Forest Acres and West Columbia.

A Brief History of Columbia

Columbia was established in 1786 and replaced Charleston as capital.  This took place as a result of the growing numbers of people moving to the area and outnumbering those in the low country.  The Columbia area grew as a prominent cotton industry, and then became more modernized during the 1820s.

By Civil War times, Columbia had become the largest inland city in the Carolinas. Columbia played an important role in the Civil War.  Around 1/3 of the city, along with military facilities and homes, were destroyed within only 24 hours after standing through four years of wartime unscathed.  By the early 20th Century, Columbia had recovered and regained national status as the state’s government seat and capital.  A military base was built there called Camp Jackson, which would later become Fort Jackson.

Today Columbia is a modern city offering diverse culture, top-notch medical and educational facilities, and interesting historic sites.

Tourism in Columbia, South Carolina

Probably one of the most popular family attractions in Columbia is the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden (http://www.riverbanks.org/).  Folks come from all around the state to tour the zoo and garden. There are more than 2,000 fascinating animals and 170 acres of natural habitat, historic landmarks, river views, and lovely valley scenes.  Garden lovers can take a trolley ride or walk across the bridge to see the gardens. There are also educational tours available for students.

Frankie's Fun Park offers go-cart rides, mini-golf, a batting cage and more. Other fun things families can enjoy in the area are bowling, skating, and miniature golf.

For museum lovers, there are plenty to go around in Columbia.  The South Confederate Relic Room & Museum (http://www.state.sc.us/crr) is a great place to learn about the Confederate Army and Civil War history.  The State Museum documents the history of South Carolina.  There's also the Columbia Museum of Art, Fort Jackson Museum, Columbia Fire Museum and the EdVenture Children's Museum.

Columbia is also rich in historic sites, plantations and mansions.  On the statehouse grounds is an African American History Monument, recapturing the history of African Americans and their contribution to society.  The Hampton-Preston Mansion & Gardens reveals the lives of the elite planter of antebellum South Carolina.  Other historic places include the Kensington Mansion, Mann-Simons Cottage, and the South Carolina Governor's Mansion.
