As a fast-growing city near the border of South Carolina, Charlotte is in the Piedmont region in Mecklenburg County.  It is the county seat and had an estimated population of 584,658 as of 2003.  Charlotte has grown to become the second largest financial capital in the nation.

Geographically, Charlotte is convenient for residents of both the southern half of North Carolina and the northern portion of South Carolina.  Many South Carolina residents are employed in or around Charlotte. A Brief History of Charlotte

Charlotte was founded on a crossroads of two Native American paths. The area was a small village of Scots-Irish descendents at the start.  Incorporated in 1768, Charlotte was named to honor Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III in England.  The Queen's homeland was a place in Germany called Mecklenburg, thus, giving the county its name as well.

Charlotte became a magnet for gold prospectors in 1799 when a gold nugget weighing 17 pounds was discovered in the area.  However, the gold boom didn't last long because of the California Gold Rush.  The area then became a center for the cotton industry, and grew and grew. Today, it is ever growing and ever changing as new businesses and people move into the area.

Well-Known People of Charlotte

Some well-known residents of Charlotte have included the Reverend Billy Graham, football player Michael J. Fox and Olympic medalist (swimming division) Donald Schollander.  Also, the television evangelist Jim Bakker who was found guilty in a religious scam had operated his ministry from Charlotte, and was known for founding the "PTL Club."

Things to See and Do in Charlotte - Charlotte's activities reach far and wide to all types of visitors and tourists.  Night life is always hopping with restaurants, live entertainment, music concerts, comedy clubs, grand movie theaters and more.  Shopping is abundant with several major malls, hundreds of unique shops and stores, and most major department stores.
