The 5 Day Secret Birthday Gift Plan: For Him
On the five days before his birthday, you ask these benign questions:
- What’s your favorite holiday?
- What’s your favorite color?
- What’s your favorite food?
- Who’s your favorite actress/actor?
- What’s one romantic thing you’ve always wanted to do?
This is how it works:
You ask your honey each one of these questions. In any order, in any way. You can do it sweetly as you curl up with him on the couch. "Baby, what was your favorite holiday growing up?" Other times, you can come right out and say, "If you were on death row, what kind of food would you have for your last meal?"
Obviously, you want this investigation to be clandestine. Since it’s near his birthday, he might know something is up but he’ll probably think you’re just fishing for ideas—which, in a way, you are. But to keep even the most perceptive or suspicious boyfriend in the dark, you must follow one rule: You can only ask one question per day.
Now, you might be thinking "I know my guy. I don’t have to ask him these questions." But do it anyway. People are always changing their minds and venturing into new passions. And no matter what, human beings love to talk about what they love.
On the night of his birthday, here’s what you’re going to do:
- Invite him over to your place for a ‘special birthday date,’ but don’t tell give him any hints. Anticipation will rev him up on the drive over. (If he lives with you, call him at work and give him something to ponder on the commute home.)
- The favorite holiday tells you how to decorate your place. You don’t have to put up a whole Christmas tree; you can just put on a Santa cap—but definitely the more the better. Go to a party supply or hobbies store. Even if the holiday isn’t in season, you can usually find something that will fit. Worse case scenario, call your mother. She has an attic full of decorations. Better yet, call his mother.
- Then, don a sweater, a dress, a new little something from Victoria’s Secret that is his favorite color. Yes, they have lingerie in forest green.
- Cook or pick up the kind of food he loves best and have it ready to eat. If he’s finicky, sit at the table, but if he’s the least bit adventurous, have a blanket on the floor and spread it out like a picnic.
- Pop in the DVD you rent or bought so it’s ready to go. Yeah, it has his favorite actor in it but it’s an obscure title or an earlier one that nobody has seen. During dinner, you can enjoy it if it’s good and laugh if it’s so not.
- Finally, after the food is in your bellies and the movie is almost, but not quite finished, you ask him, "Each day this week I asked you a question about your favorite things. The last question was a little different. Do you remember what it was?" Either he will and his eyes will get rather large or he won’t and you can just take it from there.
