Anaheim is located in the Los Angeles-Long Beach metro area of Orange County California.  The town obtained its name from "Ana" after the Santa Anna River and "heim," the German word meaning home.  This small, sleepy town expanded around Disneyland and is known as the "Happiest Place on Earth."  People come from all around to visit the kid-centralized town and see what fun and adventure it has to offer. 

The city of Anaheim had an estimated population of 328,014 in 2000.  Anaheim is known for its convention center, sports teams and theme parks. A few well-known residents have included author Henry Sienkiewicz, screenwriter/author Anita Loos, and singer/songwriter Gwen Stefani of No Doubt.  Anaheim was also the 1995 filming location for the movie "The Fan." 

Sports teams include: LA Angels of Anaheim (AL), Arsenal (NBA D League) and Mighty Ducks (NHL).  Places of higher education are Southern California Institute of Technology, Associated Technical College and Brownson Technical School.

A Brief History of Anaheim, California

In 1957, Anaheim was founded by a group of 50 immigrant families and incorporated in early 1870.  These families were grape farmers and wine makers from Bavaria. In 1880, the grape industry came to a halt, ruined by a plague of insects.  Crops of lemons, oranges and walnuts filled the void.  Anaheim grew into an industrial town, producing aircraft parts, canned fruit and electronics.

The Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s attempted to make Anaheim a Klan city and managed to obtain prominent positions secretly within the community until they were publicly exposed after a year and voted out by 95% of the population.

Welcome to Disneyland in Anaheim, California

Cartoonist Walt Disney would transform the little town with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and the rest of the gang.  He had a vision to change 160 acres of orange groves into 160 acres of family packed fun and adventure. The vision was that Disneyland would bring jobs, tourist income, and other employers to the town.  Construction of the Disneyland Theme park began on July 16, 1954 and was completed on July 17, 1955.  It is the most famous theme park in the West and the largest tourist attraction in Anaheim.  In 2001, Disney's California Adventure Park was added to Disneyland; it's the most expansive project since the theme park opened.

Anaheim Geographies

Anaheim is divided into four major areas due to its size.  Central Anaheim brings the most revenue, as it is home of Angel Stadium, Disneyland and Arrowhead Pond. West Anaheim is made up essentially of 1950 residential construction located between Garden Grove west of the county island.  Anaheim Colony is made up of restored homes from the 1960s' urban sprawl; it portrays an early 1900 atmosphere.  Finally, the Anaheim Hills community is a master-planned neighborhood consisting of approximately 22,000 larger homes in several sub-communities.
