Located just next door to the Pope Air Force Base and Fort Bragg, Fayetteville is a military-focused town with lovely parks, cultural and historical sites, and more.  But Fayetteville is much more than a military town.  Those who visit the area will find it is full of treasures and a great place to live and work.

Fayetteville is situated on the Cape Fear River in Cumberland County, and is the county seat.  The area got its name from Marquis de Lafayette, a French soldier from the American Revolution who helped local colonists.  As of 2003, the estimated population of Fayetteville was 124,372.  Nearby cities include Hope Mills (NC), Vander (NC), Fort Bragg (NC), and Eastover (NC).

A Brief Look at Fayetteville’s History

In 1754, Cumberland County was formed out of Bladen County. The following year, John Newberry built a gristmill, starting the Cross Creek settlement.  This would eventually become Fayetteville. In 1762, Campbellton was developed on the Cape Fear River near the mouth of Cross Creek.  In 1783, the name was changed from Campbellton to Fayetteville to honor Marquis de Lafayette.

A great fire occurred in 1831, destroying many buildings in Fayetteville, even the State House.  A second major fire occurred in 1845, which destroyed 53 buildings. In 1912, the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Station opened on Hay Street in Fayetteville.  The area continued to develop over the years, and today it boasts 250 years of growth.  It is very much a military town, but offers much more for visitors and residents alike.

In 1991, the movie “Billy Bathgate” was filmed in Fayetteville.  Some well-known residents who have lived in the area include Julianne Moore (actress), Cal Koonce (baseball player), and Ellen S. Baker (astronaut).  Fayetteville hosts two major festivals each year:  the Dogwood Festival in April and Glory Days in May.
