A Brief History of Bronx

The area was settled by a Puritan exile named Anne Hutchinson in 1644. Unfortunately, members of her colony were killed by Indians.  Then during the 1840s, many immigrants came to the area.  These were mainly Italian and Irish railroad workers at first.  Then the area began to grow.

During the 1960s, Bronx experienced a decline.  Crime and drug use rose as housing and employment declined.  In 1990, Bronx received national attention when 87 people were killed by a fire in a social club.  Today, Bronx has been revitalized and is visited by many tourists to New York. Some very famous people have lived there, including actress Jennifer Lopez, actor Cuba Gooding, Jr., musician Billy Joel, television spokesman Regis Philbin, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Bronx is filled with exciting attractions and interesting historic sites. Nature lovers and families will enjoy the many parks in the area.  Poe Park is located on the Grand Concourse and features the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, where Poe spent his latter years.

For fun and activity, the Pelham Bay Park offers horseback riding, golf driving ranges, bike and walking paths, picnic areas, tennis courts and playing fields.  It's the perfect getaway for some quality family time!  Other parks include Wave Hill, Orchard Beach, Crotona Park, Joyce Kilmer Park and Mullaly Skate Park.

Another family-friendly attraction is the Bronx Zoo (http://www.bronxzoo.com/).  With more than 6,000 animals and many fabulous exhibits, it's the largest metropolitan zoo in the nation.  It has an indoor rain forest, Jungle World exhibit, and even a Congo Gorilla Forest.  It's definitely worth a visit!

Museums and Historic Sites in Bronx, NY

For ball fans, the Yankee Stadium is a must-see.  It is home to the famous New York Yankees.  The stadium was built in 1923, so it is important in both the history of Major League Baseball and The Bronx.

Another interesting historic site is the Hall of Fame for Great Americans (http://www.bcc.cuny.edu/hallofFame/), located at Bronx Community College.  This was the original "Hall of Fame" for the United States, and was founded in 1900.
